Why does my talented sibling never speak up in family meetings?

Framework: The Shadow · Chapter: Ch 8: The Patterns

Kris Kluver names this archetype the Shadow. The Shadow is enormously talented and enormously invisible. The founder's presence is so large there's no oxygen left for anyone else in the room. The Shadow doesn't lack ability. They lack space. They've been talked over, passed over, or simply never asked for their opinion. After enough years, they stop volunteering. This is the family member who eventually opts out entirely, sometimes physically leaves, often quietly. The pattern shows up in many UHNW families with a dominant founder. The fix isn't telling the Shadow to speak up more. It's restructuring the meetings so they have to be heard. Explicit prompts. Round-robin contributions. Smaller groups. Time without the founder in the room. Once the Shadow's voice has space, the contributions usually surprise everyone.
