What's the difference between a rising-gen member rejecting the family and just exploring?

Framework: The Wanderer · Chapter: Appendix 2: Archetypes

Kris Kluver, in The Dysfunctional Family Office, names this archetype the Wanderer. The Wanderer is exploring. Uninterested in the family enterprise. Loves to experience the world. Often seen as disengaged but more likely searching for their own path. Their distance isn't rejection. It's exploration. Most UHNW families read the distance as rejection and respond defensively. The Wanderer who travels for years isn't refusing the family. They're figuring out who they are separate from it. The Wanderer who chooses a different career is testing whether the family path fits. The fix is patience and curiosity instead of pressure. Ask what the Wanderer is searching for. Support the search even when you don't understand the destination. Most Wanderers eventually return with clarity about how they fit into the family enterprise. The Wanderer pairs with Ruling from the Grave founder to produce Escape or Conform.
