What goes in the basic information section of a Family Charter?

Framework: Family Charter · Chapter: Appendix 5: Family Charter

Family name, effective date, and review cadence. Kris Kluver's Family Charter template, in The Dysfunctional Family Office, opens with this practical structure. The point isn't to be elaborate. It's to anchor the document with basic identifying information so everyone in the family has the same understanding of what charter version they're operating under. The effective date matters because most charters get revised. The version everyone signed in 2025 may not be the version operating in 2030. Without an effective date and a review cadence, the family quickly loses track of which agreements are current. Most UHNW families that build a charter forget this part and end up with multiple unsynchronized versions floating around within five years. The opening section isn't glamorous. It's load-bearing. The fix is to commit to a review cadence at the start, usually annual, and to update the effective date every time the charter changes.
